What is the M&K exhaust got inside them?

Postby Ploop on Thu Mar 13, 2008 1:23 pm

Hello,

I have been reading on a lot of forums that the m&k exhaust is very laud, and that it is empty     I would be very interested to know some more about the M&K silencer, and the internals.

Thank you for your time.

That is a good question, maybe Ben will post some details and pictures ? But I do know that the M&K muffler is not empty  :!:

The M&K's are empty inregards to no packing material with the exception of the turbo mufflers. What M&K's use is a noise cancelation setup so that the sound wave cancel eachother and roll together through the perferated tubing out the tail pipes.

When considering loudeness levels this is a good rule of thumb

911R model =loudest
2in 2 out  approx 94dbs
sport muffler approx 89 dbs
2in 1 out approx 84 dbs
gt3 lookapprox 83/84 dbs
stock is approx 82 dbs

Then the 1in 1 outs are just a tad louder then stock muffler

The empty thing is an interesting topic as I don't know where that came from but We @ M&K would never send a muffler body out with nothing it   One thing to keep in mind is that with changes to the engine sound levels change. also driver habbits effect certain sounds as to where the engine is lugging.

The newest gen5's will be the questiest of all of our mufflers and will be out shortly this will be a doubled wall perfed tube cahambered muffler so doubled the sounddeadening. We also have on all our gen4's noise cancelation pockets at each end close to the tail pipe s to absorb more noise. The gen5's will retain this and also have removable tail pipes for ease in shipping and adjustablity of the tail pipe positining

I hope this helps

That is some good feedback Ben. I know that there has been discussions on some of the other UK forums regarding the M&K volume and internal construction, but not sure where the "empty inside" comment comes from

I am a bit reluctant to post pictures of the inside as we all know there is someone producing a muffler similar in design to the M&K brand but I can tell all that are interested the internals are very similar to what porsche used in their 2 in 1 outs  with some freeing up so to speak of the exhaust flow. Its important to understand that the exhaust gasses enter the muffling chamber and roll around the outer shell of the muffler(on the inside)- and roll into the baffling creating a vortex and such a scavange

I completely understand your concerns Ben, and completely support that stand. I think maybe it would be good to look at patenting some of the good things that make the M&K special - including the specific internal design you use :)

I know that there is a related discussion ongoing on IB.com regarding your custom 2in mufflers for use with the 993 heat exchangers. Do these mufflers follow the same design?

yes but the 993 muffler inlet angles cause for crazy sound waves thus the reason why we only sell it as a kit and only rarly. The 993 HE are just not a good solution

Thank you

Hello,

Thank you very much for the information. I do not know very much about exhaust silencers, so do not really understand the design details.
I can not find the discussion any more, but I read on ddk that the M&K exhaust was empty.
What are the 993 heat exchangers?

Thank you for your time.

I am sure that Ben can contribute more details to this if required, but the 993 heat exchangers as installed on the 3.6 does not have the same design as the earlier heat exchangers. This requires a modified design to the inlet ports on the M&K muffler - rather than the straight in design, they are altered to enter the muffler at an angle. Here is a picture I have borrowed from another forum for reference.
